Mother Thatipatri Gnanamma – Servant of God
Mother Thatipatri Gnanamma (1819–1874), born in Phirangipuram, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, was a devout Catholic laywoman and visionary. After becoming a widow, she dedicated her life to the service of God and society. In 1862, she established a school for girls in Phirangipuram, pioneering women’s education at a time when it was rare. Later, she founded two congregations: the Sisters of St. Anne of Madras and the Sisters of St. Anne of Phirangipuram, both committed to empowering women through education and service.
Her life of faith, sacrifice, and compassion continues to inspire generations. Recognizing her holiness, the Catholic Church declared her Servant of God on 21 January 2014, beginning the process toward sainthood.
